Intro
At live events, music and music rights owners are central. They legally deserve compensation, traditionally managed by collecting societies. Event organizers report songs played and allocate revenue to compensate owners. But incomplete paper setlists create manual work for collecting societies and incorrect distribution for music rights owners, a global challenge for accurate compensation.
The following diagram illustrates this process:
Industry Challenges
One of the biggest challenges confronting the music industry is simple live music recognition. It is estimated that about 60-70% of live songs go unnoticed by audio fingerprinting technology. This means that an estimated 2 Billion Dollar worth of music royalties per year remain unclaimed, as they cannot be properly distributed without accurate recognition technology.
Why not use music recognition like Shazam? These solutions rely on fingerprint technology, matching snippets to songs. However, the problem arises when the snippet doesn't precisely match the original. For instance, imagine a tipsy drummer playing slightly offbeat - this alone can cause fingerprint technologies to fail.
Miss out on correct distribution of royalties for Music Rights Owner
Inefficient music reporting for Organizers and Collecting Societies
Falsification of the set lists by Interprets / Managements
Our Solution
The nowon platform digitizes the old-fashioned way of live music copyright reporting and enables a more precise analysis for a correct and automated music rights reporting.

Identification of live music
Unique Algorithm to identify live played music even without playback (including cover versions)
More accurate royalties allocation
Guarantee of a correct compensation for Music Rights Owners, no matter if they are upcoming or established
Massive effort minimization
Automated reporting and easy access to setlists leads to massive effort minimization for Organizer and Collecting Societies
Our Vision
nowon's unique platform will revolutionize the live event market. The blockchain based ecosystem builds on the potential of web 3.0 and creates a brand-new experience.
We are utilizing the benefit from blockchain to form decentralized communities based on music. With an unique token ecosystem we establish a new way of transferring values for engagement within the live entertainment industry from organizer to fans, from fan to artist and many more.
Let's MeetOur secret Sauce
We have benchmarked our approach against leading music recognition solutions in the market and have been able to surpass the leading cover song recognition solutions nearly by a factor of 3.
Audio Fingerprint - the most used technology for music recognition
In live performances, the instrumentation, the key and also the tempo usually varies. All these things are key elements for the fingerprint and usually cause the machines to stop working when they are changed.

Our approach - based on musical chracteristics for music recognition
A system for version identification that is robust to the main musical changes between versions, including timbre, tempo, key and structure changes.

Research Project
Together with the Swiss Innovation Agency (Innosuisse) and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences (HSLU) we are doing further state of the art research in the field of music characterization. The research is funded by Innosuisse with CHF 575'000 and includes a 6 person research team from HSLU.
In addition, we have been working with the MTG (Music Technology Group) to optimize the algorithm even more successfully with the help of their expertise.
The Music Technology Group (MTG) is one of the world's foremost research groups in the field of music technology. MTG is a part of the Department of Information and Communication Technologies at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, and it was founded in 1994 by Xavier Serra.
